Unlocking space with Igloo | The world’s first smart lock in space

How tough is the Igloo Smart Padlock 2?

Igloo’s tech is very impressive — but is it robust enough? Electronics don’t always fare well when faced with the great outdoors, and with a smart padlock, a technological failure could be disastrous when you’re in a foreign city, trying to get into a holiday let. Igloo are supremely confident in their equipment, so much so that for their 8th anniversary, they asked us to take their flagship Padlock 2 and test its performance in the harshest environment possible: space.


The gold standard of Military Testing is the US Department of Defence MIL-STD-810H specification, which assesses hardware against 28 environmental factors. Ruggedized testing under laboratory conditions are a great initial indication of a product’s reliability, but real-world environmental testing can throw up surprises.


Environmental validation in space

Our team specialise in optimising technology for deployment in Near Space and providing environmental validation services. The Smart Padlock 2 passed 7 of the most relevant MIL-STD-810H tests with flying colours, but our tests push things a little further — 1/50 of the pressure and 20°C lower temperature than their most extreme conditions.

We took 8 of the ultra-limited release Smart Padlock 2 Space Edition units and launched them over 100,000 feet above the Earth. To maximise the quality of the resulting visuals, we conducted two flights, one focusing on a single lock and another showcasing five around a cutting-edge 360° camera system. We setup a local wireless network integrated with our flight computer to send the unlock code to the devices at peak altitude, over 100,000 feet above the Earth. Without any modifications to the device’s power and insulative features, would they continue to perform?
