Samsonite Proxis: Space Launch Durability Test

We're no strangers to pushing boundaries—figuratively and literally. From launching blockbuster movie trailers to blending smoothies at high altitudes, we've always embraced the challenge of taking campaigns to extraordinary places.


When Samsonite approached us with the idea of subjecting their Proxis suitcase to the most extreme durability test imaginable, we knew we were in for an exciting project. They didn't just want a gentle trip to the stratosphere; they wanted their suitcase to face the harshest conditions and then make a dramatic return—crashing wheels-first on landing.

Designing the spacecraft and planning this mission required meticulous planning. We needed to ensure the suitcase would be fully exposed to the elements without any protective casing.


We built a bespoke spacecraft in order to lift the Proxis to an altitude of 130,000 feet, where it encountered temperatures as low as -70°C and atmospheric pressure less than 1% of that at sea level. As usual, we opted for a carbon fibre as a spacecraft construction material. This provided us with a high strength, lightweight frame to carry the Samsonite case, as well as the camera and stacking systems.


In line with our commitment to environmental responsibility, we opted to use renewable hydrogen gas instead of helium to lift the suitcase into the sky. Helium is a scarce and finite resource which has vital uses in medicine. Conversely, hydrogen is the most abundant element in the known universe. Our approach ensures that we leave nothing behind, either in space or on the ground, minimising the environmental impact of our missions.

To document the Samsonite space launch and drop test, we equipped the Proxis with a custom camera system and a flight computer. These tools allowed us to monitor the suitcase's journey in real-time, tracking atmospheric conditions and flight paths with precision. The stunning footage we captured showcases the Earth from the edge of space—a sight that never ceases to amaze us.

After its ascent, the suitcase began its descent back to Earth. Guided by a self-deploying parachute system, it hurtled toward a predetermined mountainside location in the Nevada desert. The suitcase collided wheels-first with the rugged terrain—a scenario far more extreme than any standard drop test.

Upon retrieval, the results of the Samsonite space launch were nothing short of astonishing. The Proxis suitcase emerged virtually unscathed. Its Roxkin™ outer shell, a lightweight, fully recyclable and highly resilient material, showed no signs of damage. Even the wheels withstood the impact with barely a scratch.
