The SentIntoSpace team push the forefront of science in the hunt for bacterial life in the stratosphere.
Teaming up with Professor Milton Wainwright of the University of Sheffield we sent a special payload to capture a sample of particles from near space.
Two flights were undertaken, one for a control sample (where the drawer was not opened at altitude) and one where the drawer opened at 22km and closed at 27km. The payload was then recovered and the samples placed into an electron microscope for observation.
Here’s what we found:
The particles found have been suggested to originate from outside of the Earth’s atmosphere (based on current understanding of how particles travel to such altitudes). For more info, read the journal paper published here
